Product Support

Advance products are designed and manufactured to be as simple to install and operate as possible, although we know sometimes things don’t go as smoothly as hoped. Here are some of the most common questions answered which will hopefully get you on your way. Transceivers

Q: My switch is not showing any activity when I plug in a transceiver module.
A: Ensure you have firmly seated the module into the switch port, and ensure the port is not shutdown in the switch configuration.

Q: My switch detects the transceiver module but does not accept it, shows an error or has shut the port down.
A: Advance modules are encoded to suit specific vendors and will not work in other vendor devices without reconfiguration. Ensure you order according to your precise platform.

Q: My switch has accepted a transceiver, but I am not getting a network connection.
A: Ensure both ends of the fibre link are using matched transceiver modules, and verify there is a cross-over in the fibre at some point in the link to ensure that Tx and Rx ends are matched correctly.

Q: My switch is not turning on copper transceiver modules.
A: Some switches are unable to deliver enough power to SFP ports to enable the use of copper transceivers, or may only deliver enough power to enable some but not all ports. Verify with your switch vendor to ensure it supports the use of copper transceivers.

DAC/AOC Cables

Q: Why is there no network connection between my devices when using a DAC or AOC assembly?
A: Ensure the modules at each end of the cable are firmly seated into the ports of the host devices, and check the ports are not shutdown in the configurations. The modules at each end of the cable also need to be encoded according to the host device – see transceivers.

Q: I have different vendor platforms at each end of my attach cable, how can this be supported?
A: Advance DAC and AOC assemblies can be dual coded to allow operation between varied host equipment. Contact us for more information.

Breakout Cables

Q: Why is there no network connection between some or all of my devices when using a breakout assembly?
A: Ensure the modules at all ends of the assembly are firmly seated into the ports of the host devices, and check the ports are not shutdown in the configurations. The modules at all ends of the assembly also need to be encoded according to the host device – see transceivers.

Q: I have more than one vendor platform at each end of the breakout assembly, how can this be supported?
A: Advance breakout assemblies can be coded to allow operation between varied host equipment. Contact us for more information.

Media Converters

Q: My media converter is not powering on.
A: Ensure you are using the power supply that came with the media converter, or a suitable alternative. 5VDC 1A is required to ensure correct operation. Note 10G media converters include an internal power supply, ensure the mains cable is firmly seated and the power switch is in the ‘On’ position.

Q: There is no network connection on the copper side.
A: Ensure the patch cable is inserted correctly in the RJ-45 port and that it is rated at a minimum to Cat5e or Cat6a for 10G media converters. The media converter has an auto MDI/MDI-X negotiation feature, therefore straight through or cross-over patch cables can be used.

Q: There is no network connection on the fibre side.
A: Check the fibre patch cable is inserted correctly in the fibre port, and that it meets the minimum requirement and is within the maximum allowable distance for your particular converter model. Fibre optic links require the pair to cross over once in the link. Please ensure there is a cross over, swapping the ends over on the patch cable if required.

PoE Devices

Q: The PoE injector does not power on.
A: Ensure you have firmly inserted the mains cable into the injector and that it is plugged into a suitable 240V mains power source.

Q: There is no PoE power being delivered to my device.
A: Ensure you have plugged the device to be powered into the Data & Power Out port and that you have used a patch cable rated to Cat5e as a minimum. Total link length must not exceed 100m.

Q: There is no network connection.
A: Ensure you have patched in a suitable Ethernet connection to the Data In port and that you have used a Cat5e patch cable or better. Total link length must not exceed 100m.
